Mid 2011 21" iMac - bipping / clicking sound

This is going to sound like a total pedantic thing..

I have a mid 2011 iMac that does pretty much everything i need, but it has two annoying issues.

a) the shadowy/light dust buildup at top corners of the display that's difficult to fix (it's not behind the glass, must be between layers of the screen)

b) Occasionally the iMac makes a quiet but annoying bip bip bip noise. Originally i thought it was the central back fan, but it doesn't speed up if i increase the fan speed. It seems to start and stop for no obvious reason. On a usually whisper quiet machine it's distracting. I think it might be the PSU, if that's even possible.

.. To fix or even properly troubleshoot the iMac I guess I have to disassemble it through the screen.. Before I even think about that, has anyone had similar noises, or suggestions? I know if i take it somewhere for repairs it'll mysteriously not make the noise and they'll claim it's normal. It's definitely not normal - it only started doing it within the last month.

It's probably not the HDD - I run my iMac from an external TB SSD drive. It could be the internal HDD doing something though? There is no OSX partition on the internal drive at all, just windows.

Thanks in advance!

Hi All,

I wondering if it possible to upgrade the Airport card in a 2012 iMac to the one from a 2013 iMac ? Wasn't sure if the card was built on to the mother board or not ?

2009/2010 iMac, Worth it or Not

So I decided that I'm finally done with Windows and I'm planning to buy an iMac. The only problem is I don't have a very high budget, around $800 or so. So I have been looking at Ebay Auctions and basically, here are my options:
2009 iMac 27" with i5, 8GB ram, and a Ati 4850 for $720
2010 iMac 27" with i5, 4GB ram, and a Ati 5750 for $800
2011 iMac 21.5" with i5, 4gb ram, and a Amd 6770m for $730
Are either of these iMacs still good for Internet, Word, Email, Watching Movies, and light gaming? by gaming I mean GTA: San Andreas and Minecraft on OS X.
Also how well do these Macs run OSX Mavericks? Should I buy any of them?

iMac SSD Upgrade - local service?

I have a 2010 27" iMac, and I'm interested in adding a SSD to it (keeping the regular HDD inside too). Obviously it is easy to buy an SSD...but I'm not confident I could handle the installation. Has anyone ever had a local computer shop perform this upgrade for them? I was thinking of calling Micro Center or Best Buy. I know OWC has their turnkey program, but I'm interested in doing it locally instead of shipping off my baby.

Will this RAM work on a mid 2007 iMac?

Confused about iMac Monitors.

I've recently been considering getting an iMac as I process a lot of photos and my 15" MBP screen just isn't big enough anymore. I had a recent trip to an Apple store to fix my wife's iphone and whilst I was there had a very quick look at the iMac screens. They are lovely, but I was a little disappointed in there sharpness when compared to the MBP retina displays, which you'd expect when you look at the DPI. However, I then saw a screen which looked much sharper, and when I went into system preferences to look at the resolution I'm sure it said Retina. However, looking on the Apple store I can't see any iMacs, or monitors with retina.

Am I looking in the wrong place, or did I hallucinate the retina monitor? I will be going back to the store when my wife's phone comes back from being fixed so will have another look, but if anyone can shed any light in the meantime that'd be great :)

Cheers

Reduce CPU Fan Speed

Looks like I messed something up when I was putting my iMac back together after replacing a faulty internal drive. I need something that will override the system CPU fan speed and let me reduce it (it is currently running at max speed). The programs I've found only override HDD and optical drive fan speeds. I've never been able to hear my CPU fan for the life of my mac, so I think just reducing the fan speed to medium should be perfectly safe.

Is there any chance Apple will announce iMac with multi-core ARM processors in WWDC2014?

I really want to own iMac (all-in-one with large monitor) to develop iOS apps without spending large amount of money.

I want 21-inch, quad-core ARM processor, 8GB memory, 1TB hard disk, $999 :D

iMac Power supply - output voltage testing

Hello,

I have an iMac 24 Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.3Ghz purchased in May 2007 (probably a 2006 model). I would like to test the internal PSU to verify that all voltage outputs are good.
The power supply model is labelled as 614-0387 and has 2 rows of 4 outputs.

Would any one have the details of what voltage is expected on which output port? There seems to be +12V and +24V outputs marked on the PSU board.

Many thanks for your help

Replacement for 24" White Matte Screen iMac

I have a 2006 model 2.16Ghz 2MB RAM 24" white matte screen iMac that's served me well but has considerable dark gray screen burn in spots and is showing its age by running slow. I will only buy a non-glossy, non-glass matte monitor/screen as the reflections from a glossy screen would drive me crazy, especially considering the room the computer will be in. I have read conflicting reports on whether or not the 2013 and 2014 iMac is a glossy, glossy-light or matte screen. Wikipedia indicates "Glossy glass-covered widescreen 16:9, LED backlighting and IPS technology." This makes me wary. I don't want to see any reflection at all, especially since I sometimes spend a long time in front of the screen. If the new iMacs don't have any reflection, then would a 24" or 27" be better for me?

If the new iMacs are indeed glossy screens, then is there a 24" or similar sized non-widescreen matte monitor that would be similar to the 24" white iMac screen? I do not like true widescreen monitors, where there is hardly any vertical. I consider the 24" white iMac to be a compromise or middle ground between 4:3 and 16:9. I don't mind going the Mac Mini route.

Is there an advantage to buying an iMac or Mac Mini via the Apple refurbished store vs buying a 6 month old unit via a private party on Craigslist that has an Apple Warranty?

I truly wish I could purchase a 2006 model White Intel plastic 24" iMac again but since computers don't have odometers so to speak , there's no way to tell how many hours they've been on or used. I would buy one that's been sitting in a closet for years, though there's no way to verify that statement.

Thunderbolt display versus iMac

What's the difference in quality between a 27" iMac monitor and the Thunderbolt display? If the screens are the same quality, it seems that for a few dollars more, you get a complete computer with the iMac, or am I missing something ?

SSD via USB3

Is anyone running an SSD (Crucial, Samsung) via USB 3 on their iMac as their primary boot drive? How do you find it? How do you compare it to a SATA-connected SSD internally? (Obviously PCI-e is faster in the new Macs.)

I'm getting an annoying hiss from my iMac when I run the audio out to my PA system. It's not a million dollar system or anything, but it's decent and I get no noise when I run an iPod through it.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

External Hard Drive Won't Work! Help!

Help! I've tried everything...

I plugged in my hard drive and I got a notification pop up saying that I can't add files to the drive because it's damaged. I opened up disk utility and verified it, says it needed repair. I tries repairing but it will not work. I Then restarted and got command+r and tried from there as well but it will not work.

Then I went a different route. To reformat it and erase everything on the drive so I can just get it to work. I tried in disk utility and it says that it can't unmount it. I tried in command+r after restarting as well and it wouldn't work there either.

What do I do?? I just want to mention I don't care about losing the data (I had another backup) I just want it to work again. Thank you!

Help: CPU-fan runs max - ASD test iMac 24" early 2008

$

Out of the blue one evening, while the iMac was on, a fan kicked in.
And after restarting, and resetting SMC, it never returned to normal speed.

The Apple Hardware Test had this result:
4SNS/1/40000000:TLOP-130.000

So I opened the iMac to see if the LCD sensor cable was disconnected or damaged
(as a year ago I have replaced the GeForce 8800GS videocard and swapped the HDD with SDD, ever since the iMac didn't have any problem).
But no signs of damage or so; and after restarting the fan keeps blowing at almost max

Who can tell me what part(s) is/are the problem with the following ASD test results???? Motherboard? Cables? Sensor(s)????
The ASD* test (ASD OS & ASD EFI) logs returned 4 errors.

First the ASD EFI test:

Temp (TA0P) - Ambient air temperature sensor test 1 - Sensor Reads Within Operating Range
- Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR - Sensor is reading above the high limit
- TEST FAILED -

Temp (TG0D) - GPU 0 Die Temp test 1 - Sensor Reads Within Operating Range
- Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR - Sensor is reading above the high limit
- TEST FAILED -

Temp (TL0P) - LCD proximity temperature test 1 - Sensor Reads Within Operating Range
- Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR - Sensor is reading above the high limit
- TEST FAILED -

SMC test 1 SMC PID Sensor check
-Checks the SMC PID Sensor warning counter that is monitoring sensors of each PID loop erratic behaviour.
ERROR - The SMC’s PID Sensor check has been tripped
- TEST FAILED -

And the (similar) errors from the ASD OS test:
*
Temp (TA0P) - Ambient air temperature sensor (test#1) - Sensor Reads Within Operating Range
- Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR --13007 [The SMC could not initialize this sensor] -- (1.00) TEST FAILED

Temp (TG0D) - GPU 0 Die* Temp (test#1) - Sensor Reads Within Operating Range
- Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR --13007 [The SMC could not initialize this sensor] -- (1.00)*TEST FAILED

Temp (TL0P) - LCD proximity temperature (test#1) - Sensor Reads Within Operating Range
- Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR --13007 [The SMC could not initialize this sensor] -- (1.00)*TEST FAILED

SMC: SMC PID Sensor check (test#1) - SMC PID Sensor check
-Checks the SMC PID Sensor warning counter that is monitoring sensors of each PID loop erratic behaviour.
ERROR -- 1 [The SMC’s PID Sensor check has been tripped] -- TEST FAILED

Recommend a configuration?

We've recently decided we'd like to buy an imac but we are a bit lost with what configuration to go for. It will be a family computer - by day I'll be using it to work - photoshop/indesign. Then on an evening we're likely to want to play some games - world of warcraft, league of legends, diablo 3. As well as all of the other general use such as watching videos, e-mails, internet etc...

The reason I'm asking here is neither of us really understand the differences in graphics cards or processors. We don't want to overbuy for needs but equally we don't want to spend all that money and find it can't keep up.

Given what I've said we'd use it for can someone recommend the sweet spot? Ideally we both prefer the 21" in size but are the specs for the 27" machine a lot better for what we want?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Our budget is around £1600 but it could be stretched a little.
